Introduction to Brandchaft’s Theory of Pathological Accommodation

Many have heard the phrase pathological accommodation, a form of self-subjugation in which one sacrifices one’s own distinctiveness for the sake of maintaining a connection to an important other, usually a parent. While Brandchaft did not formulate this concept until later in his career, paradoxically this concept is best illustrated in his early papers. These papers will be read and discussed to provide an accessible, useful grounding for this valuable clinical concept.
