Four-Year Psychoanalytic Training Program

Certificate in Psychoanalysis

Educational courses, supervised clinical practice, personal analysis, and a publishable paper.

Program Overview

A Synergistic Approach to Psychoanalytic Training

Through the Four-Year Psychoanalytic Training Program, we encourage the development of a community of clinicians and scholars. This rigorous 4-year program fosters adept clinician-scholars through three interrelated components of training: courses, supervision, and personal analysis.

Our cohorts learn and grow together, with a goal of experiencing a mutual opening and reflective deepening that leads to a richer understanding of the theoretical and clinical process.

Your mentors will support you in your individualized growth with a self psychological touch, enabling you to find your own voice as a psychoanalytic professional.

Class Format:

Classes are hybrid and take place live online via Zoom.

For candidates and instructors in the New York City area, in consultation with the candidates, instructors and administrators, the class may take place in the instructors office while including the Zoom participants.

Sessions are not recorded/are not available on demand.

Requirements to Graduate:

  • Clinical practice with three patients 3x per week, with 200 hours of supervision
  • 300 hours of personal analysis, 3x per week
  • A psychoanalytic paper of publishable quality
  • Field of Psychoanalysis Course (Four Saturdays):
This course is the equivalent of one class in 2 Trimesters of the 3rdand 4th years of training. It takes place on 2 Saturdays in the 3rd year and two in the 4th year. Through participating in this unique course, candidates will have an opportunity to meet as a class, with significant psychoanalytic contributors of their choice for intensive 1- day seminars.  These seminars give the candidates a chance to understand how their visiting theorist’s writings have evolved, what they are currently emphasizing and how these theorists respond to clinical cases. The course offers an intimate and invaluable way to see where the field of psychoanalysis is today.

Courses

Class Schedule & Location

Classes take place live online via Zoom. Sessions are not recorded/are not available on demand.

Curriculum

Through IPSS, candidates will learn from experienced instructors specializing in the subject matter they are teaching.

Our curriculum provides candidates with a foundation in Self Psychology and our distinctive version of Intersubjective Self Psychology, in addition to applications of Infant Research, Theories of Intersubjective Systems Thinking, and Systems of Pathological Accommodation.

These areas of knowledge represent the theoretical writings and clinical applications of our founding faculty members, expanded upon by current faculty. Other courses include sequences in Freud and the Freudian tradition, Object Relations, and Interpersonal and Relational Theory.

In the first two years, candidates focus on an in-depth study of the broad range of perspectives in psychoanalysis. In the following two years, candidates are encouraged to think comparatively, to play with how theories can be integrated and to study how theory can be applied clinically. Additionally, in the final year courses are offered on partiuclar topics such as Gender and Sexuality Studies, Race/Culture Studies, Substance Use, Eating Disorders and Trauma.

Throughout the program, we apply theory to understanding the clinical process through formal and informal clinical discussions in class. Applying theory to practice and thinking of practice in theoretical terms becomes second nature.

Supervision

During the program, candidates are required to see three patients 3x a week and receive 200 hours of supervision with three different supervisors. 160 of those hours must be devoted to their clinical experiences, and 40 hours can be spent discussing other cases. We assist candidates in finding and developing their clinical cases.

Candidates are encouraged to begin supervision with an IPSS-trained supervisor to provide them with a basis in our intersubjective approach. This mentorship helps bridge the didactic training with the clinical application.

Candidates can elect to work with qualified supervisors from the training faculty at IPSS or they may elect to work with a qualified supervisor of their choice. A qualified supervisor must have completed a certificate psychoanalytic training program and must have five years of experience post completion of their program.

Candidates who are studying remotely from out of New York State receive supervisory consultations on their 3x week cases (termed “educational consultation”), designed to meet both licensing and program requirements.

Working at the intensive 3x-a-week frequency is an eye opening experience, bringing concepts like the intersubjective matrix and transference countertransference alive, and deepening candidates’ analytic perspective. No matter what the frequency of any case, we know from experience at IPSS that all clinical work can be expanded and deepened as a result of the training process.

Personal Analysis

We require candidates to complete 300 hours of 3x a week psychoanalysis with a qualified analyst*. This personal analysis takes place over a 2-3 year period in concurrence with courses and clinical supervision so candidates can derive the integrative benefit.

This personal analysis is invaluable, enhancing each candidate’s ability to reflect upon and work through issues impacting learning, integrating theory, and clinical experience, or any other emergent dimensions of experience during the training.

This reflective process is essential, ongoing, and never ending. It is a cornerstone of intersubjective work, right up there with empathy.

*To be qualified, the analyst must be a graduate from a psychoanalytic institute and have 5 years of experience after the completion of their analytic training.

Paper Requirements

As a final requirement for graduation, candidates must produce a psychoanalytic paper of publishable quality on any topic (or topics) of their choice, with the support of our faculty. Candidates are provided 4 sessions with their advisor during 3-4 years for which IPSS pays $125/session.  If more time is needed, candidates must arrange for payment with their advisors individually.

Typically, candidates choose and develop their paper during the third and fourth years of training. Candidates select a mentor from amongst our faculty, who provides guidance throughout this creative process.

Through writing, candidates can define and articulate their distinctive voice, illuminating potential areas of contribution in their subsequent career. It is an opportunity to bring together the insights and interests developed across the program’s four years of training.

While this challenge may seem daunting at first, it is often a culminating, integrative process for candidates.
