Foundations of Psychoanalysis

1-Year Online Certificate Program

Weekly courses and clinical case seminars, with optional supervisory consultations.

Program Overview

The Foundations in Psychoanalysis program offers clinicians with a graduate degree in a mental health field the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of contemporary psychoanalysis, in a convenient live class online format and schedule.

Participants attend two classes every Wednesday evening (from 7:00 – 9:15 PM) over the course of 34 weeks.

A valuable opportunity to build upon the classroom experience and integrate the theoretical and clinical discussions into one’s own work.  IPSS faculty bring diverse perspectives but a shared belief in developing one’s own voice and style.  Program coordinators can help facilitate a fit with supervisors.  20 hours of low-cost supervisory consultations are offered at $50 per session.

The year-long sequence of courses is designed to expand each participant’s therapeutic repertoire and broaden their range of psychotherapeutic capacities. A unique combination of theoretical contemporary psychoanalytic classes and clinical case study expands and enhances participants’ psychotherapy practice.

Class Schedule & Location

Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 9:15 PM, over 34 weeks.

Classes take place live online via Zoom. Zoom sessions are not recorded/are not available on demand.

Curriculum

The study of contemporary psychoanalysis includes a focus on the intrapsychic, intersubjective, and socio political realm.

Courses begin with an overview of traditional Freudian theory, moving on to the fundamentals of Self Psychological theory. Participants will develop an understanding of the evolution of thinking about narcissism, concepts of the development of the self, and implications of infant research for adult treatment.

Following the fundamentals of Self Psychology theory, the course addresses Contemporary Intersubjectivity theory: working with trauma, substance abuse treatment, and concluding with an overview of American Relational theory. Underpinning all the material presented is an accounting for the socio political realm.
