Contemporary Self Psychological Approaches to Clinical Work in Communities

This course will explore what our current psychoanalytic knowledge of the change process can contribute to our understanding of bringing about change in community social systems. We will consider how the theorizing of Kohut, August Aichorn(Kohut’s first analyst) and infancy research can lead us to view agency, empathy, diversity, and justice as developmental processes within a societal context. From a “how-to”perspective, we will look at clinical work that has taken place in neighborhoods, schools, health care facilities, and in public policy and law enforcement macro-systems. We will imagine other ways in which we might apply our self psychological developmental knowledge to civic systems.
